An Analysis of the Impact of Cross-Border E-commerce on Consumer Behavior: A Case Study of Taobao's International Shipping

Previous research on e-commerce and consumer behavior has focused on factors influencing online purchasing decisions, such as trust, convenience, and product availability. Cross-border e-commerce adds another layer of complexity, with consumers facing additional challenges like language barriers, cultural differences, and shipping logistics.

The growth of e-commerce has led to an increase in cross-border online shopping, with consumers seeking products not available in their domestic markets or looking for better deals. Taobao, launched in 2003, is one of China's largest e-commerce platforms, with over 700 million active users. To cater to international customers, Taobao introduced its international shipping service, allowing consumers worldwide to purchase products from Chinese sellers.

The growth of cross-border e-commerce has significant implications for consumer behavior, with platforms like Taobao leading the way. By understanding the motivations, challenges, and experiences of consumers who download Taobao and shop on the platform, businesses and policymakers can develop strategies to improve the cross-border e-commerce experience and facilitate global trade.

The rise of cross-border e-commerce has transformed the way consumers shop online, with platforms like Taobao, a popular Chinese e-commerce site, expanding their reach globally. This paper explores the impact of cross-border e-commerce on consumer behavior, using Taobao's international shipping as a case study. We examine the motivations, challenges, and experiences of consumers who download Taobao and shop on the platform.

This study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data. We conducted online surveys of 500 consumers who have downloaded Taobao and shopped on the platform, as well as in-depth interviews with 20 frequent Taobao shoppers.
