Set in 1914, the story follows Paul Grappe, who deserts the front lines of WWI after being wounded. To hide from the military police in Paris, his wife Louise helps him disguise himself as a woman named Suzanne. What begins as a survival tactic evolves into a complex exploration of gender and identity as Paul spends ten years living as Suzanne in the vibrant world of 1920s Paris. Once he is finally granted amnesty, he struggles to return to his life as a man.
